Blog Prompts #5, #6, & #7

#5 Give your thoughts on one or both of the following quotes.
“Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man.” ~Edward Steichen

“I just think it's important to be direct and honest with people about why you're photographing them and what you're doing. After all, you are taking some of their soul.” ~Mary Ellen Mark

Oh wow this is some deep stuff here ok my thoughts well yeah with reguard to the first quote a photograph does help in explaining man to man sometimes it is hard to describe what a person looks like to another person what their view is may be completely different from what the person may really look like. As the saying goes, "A photo is worth a thousand words" from one pic you could see what a person is all about. Now the second qoute you should never take a picture of some one without their permission its not so much that we take some of their soul (which for some really happens Click click mwahahaha) but its an invation of space.
#6 In your opinion, when is it beneficial, ethical, or appropriate to digitally alter photographic portraits? When do you think it is inappropriate or ethically wrong?

Really I don't like digitally altered pics it just doesn't work for me the way you take it should be the way it is. when would it be beneficial would be when there are people or things in the frame that you didn't want in the scene and it becomes inappropriate to alter when you are mutalating a scene or getting back at someone.
#7 Pay close attention to the types and number of photographic portraits you see in one day. Where did you see them? How do you think that the content of the portrait changes based on the context in which you see the image (news, facebook, magazine, advertisement, television, youtube, etc)? In other words, what is the difference between the portraits you see on facebook vs. those on the news? What is the difference between the “viewpoint” of the photographer in each situation? What is the difference between their “intents”?

From my understanding the pictures you see on someone's facebook are pictures linked to happy memories and were gifted to be simple everyday moments but when it comes to photos in the news these images are bringing the world to us capturing moments of great pain and sorrow to us. Also they sho us the way things use to be

Assignment 1

Historic Zoom: Clock tower 2011

Historic Zoom: Pillars 2011
Historic Zoom: Museum 2011
  • With this image I wanted to get the whole building center in the middle kind of framed in by the surroundings to give it an old feel that its a lost historic site and the cloudy sky really helped with the feel of the image.
  •  My idea was to find old fashioned places around campus I basically froze my butt off walking around campus taking 12 or so shot of old looking buildings and places.
  • The goal here was to capture what isn't seen but is seen on a daily base on campus what I mean is take photos of places that wouldn't be seen by students even though they pass right by them.
  • I think the context behind my image is historic and matches the idea of other photographers in that we want to capture what people wouldn't normally see.
Midday Light: Construction
  • With this image I wanted to capture as much of the construction site as I could but be zoomed in, seeing workers and the intricacies of the build, with all the different angles and lines. The different shades also help in the composition.
  • Again I didn't plan this I just went to two of the 4 major construction sites and took pics responing to the prompt construction.
  • I basically thought with this image the idea of the  progress and the steps to construct a building would be best.
  • Context wise I was thinking about progress of the school.

Slow Shutter Speed: Hero/Doppelganger
  • Here was one of my first times really getting into Photograph learning how the camera works in all, at the time I didn't have a Tripod so the image isn't centered cuz I can't holding centered.
  • My Idea was to capture my roommates going crazy, constantly moving around not sitting still just plan goofing off, and have them be out of focus as well with the background mostly focused.
  • I kind of thought this one out a little but I had the Girls pick where they wanted to perform and what they wanted to do, I didn't really try to center things but the shots worked non-the-least
  • My Goal here was to capture fun time and the actions that people make and do.

Blog Prompts #3 & #4

#3 “Photography deals exquisitely with appearances, but nothing is what it appears to be.”~Duane Michals. Write a brief reaction to this quote. Is this quote applicable to your experience with photography? What does it mean to you? Do you agree with the idea presented or disagree?
Nothing is as it appears, it's true. The world we see isn't as it appears because we only see the world as our brains tell us to see it. It fits well with photography because when we take a picture the image is orginally upside down, due to the way light enters, till the camera flips it just like our brains do. To me it means that we should all look at the world alittle more closely and careful to what the world truely looks like, cause I agree nothing is as it appears.

#4 “If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn't need to lug around a camera.” ~Lewis Hine.

Write a brief reaction to this quote. Is this quote applicable to your experience with photography? What does it mean to you? Do you agree with the idea presented or disagree? Describe situations when photographic images reveal “the story” (as compared to words). Describe situations when words reveal “the story” (as compared to images).

Photos do tell a story cause they capture a moment in time. These moments in time are memories which mean a lot to me so this quote hits home for me but I'd rather lung around a camera than just write down the memory. A time in which a photo tells a story for example is of a party of family function photos that show action that aren't too abstract. Words tell the story when they're descriding an event or action.

Blog Prompts #1 and #2

Blog Prompt #1: Imagine a world without photographs. Describe what this world would be like.

A drawn world. By that I mean that all images would be drawn and/or painted. We wouldn't be able to capture moments in time or create albums of what our family really looked like it would all be an artist rendering. I think it would be a more creative world just because I really hate the way technology is changing photography if we ever have a magnetic pulse we wouldn't know how to develop pictures and I don't see the art in digital photopraphy cause a computer did it. If there weren't photographs the world would be open to creativity and doing things by hand.

Blog Prompt #2: What does the word "photograph" mean to you?

A memory, a moment in time that captures a feeling. A way to remember the past, a way to look at my past if it werent for photos I wouldn't remember much of my past. Its hard for me to remember things good things mostly so photographs are my memory to me any way thats what the word means for me.

Recreate Assignment One

I chose Handstands by Heinrich Zille in 1900. He was born Jan. 10 1858 in Germany he is a German illustrator and photographer. His work is known for its funny drawings mostly of stereotypes. He was first to portray the social environment in Berlin tenement barracks which were rooms filled with people in poverty in Grunderzeit industrial metropolis. He said he work is not talent but hard work.

In Handstands the image isn't centered  the action is more to the upper part of the photo and the contrast between the black of the figures and the white of the hill and sky give the photo the feel of a drawing at first glance. I believe Zille was going for a normal fun time for young men at the time and giving it a looming feel riding on the edge of danger. Zille uses many dark colors there really isn't any white in the pic it's more of a light gray than white putting and emphise on the boys. I like Handstand by how it doesn't look like a photo at first but a drawing on how the foreground looks like a pencil did it.

With my recreation I wanted to do a sort of "what happens next"  deal with the boys all doing handstand but have the boy that's sitting think "Ha" and pushing everyone over cuz in Zille the boy who is sitting looks as if he couldn't do a handstand. I wanted the colors to be close in contrast with the boys being dark and the back being bright. I think it turned out alright of a first time I need to work on lighting which looks to be my problem.
